Scriptural Keys to Effective Prayer

1.  Ask   ( James 4:2, Luke 11:9, John 16:24 )

    Why don't we ask ?

a)Don't really believe in the power of prayer

b)Feel our request is too “big” or too “little”

c)Allow other things to prevent us; i.e. laziness, poor planning, etc.

What comes by asking ?    "greater works" John 14:10-14

                                         "much fruit"    John 15:5-8

2.  Ask with proper Motives

Examine yourself:" Why do I want what I am asking for ?"

      a) for my own cravings?  James 4:3

      b) for God’s glory?   John 14:11-14, 15:8

For God to be glorified in meeting my need according to His will.

3. Ask according to God’s Will ( I John 5: 14 & 15 )

    Is this a " limitation”?

a)Jesus taught by instruction and example that we - should pray

         according to God's will. (Matthew 6:10, 26: 36-46)

b)Jesus' only purpose and desire was to do the Father's will.

       ( John 4:34, 5:30, 6:38 )

Should our desire be anything less?( Matt 12:50,Phil 2:13 )

    c)  If God is perfect in wisdom and love, what could we

possibly want that could be better than His will ?

Part of God's will is to bless His children with "good gifts". (Mt 7:11) He also desires that none should be lost.( I John 6:39 & 40 )

How can we know God's will ?     Through four main sources:

   a)The Scriptures

   b)Other members of the Body

c)The inner voice of the Holy Spirit

   d)Circumstances

4. . Ask from an Obedient Lifestyle ( I John 3:21, 22 )

       a) The Lord's ears are attentive to the prayers of the righteous.

                  (I Peter 3:12, James 5:16)

       b)  We are made righteous by faith in Christ. Also, righteous means "right living". Not that we are flawless, but that we walk in obedience to what we know is right, with a heart that is poised to please God; ready to do whatever He tells us.

5.  Ask in Jesus’ name    (John 14:13&14,15:16,16:23-27)

Jesus' name has been exalted above every other name. It is the name of the Supreme Ruler and Redeemer of all things.   (Philippians 2:9 & 10,

Eph 1:18-23,3:20, Col 1:13-20) The name of salvation is also the name of signs and wonders.(Acts 3:16,4:7-12,30) It is the name in which to speak and do everything. (Colossians 3:17)

To ask in Jesus' name is not an incantation , like " Abbra-Cadabra ", but it is a declaration of faith. It is not a “magic wand” but a “scepter” of royal authority. It is more than just saying the words,"in Jesus' name". When we say those words, we are acknowledging Jesus as Lord and Christ. We are exercising the "power of attorney” given to us as members of His Body. We “ask” in His stead. We ask as if He were asking.

6.  Ask in Faith (Matt 21:21 & 22, James 1:6,7, 5:15 )

The apostle John states four things that affect the level of confidence we have when approaching God in prayer:

a)Practical demonstration of love towards others (I John 3:16-20)

  b) Obeying God's commands                    (I John 3:21-23)

  c)  Believing in Jesus’ name                      (I John 3:23)

  d)  Asking according to God’s will               (I John 5:14 & 15)

Hebrews 11:6 sums up two aspects of our faith towards God:

"...for he who comes to God must believe that He is , and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

7.  Keep on Asking!! (Matt 7:7-11, Luke 11:5-13,18:1-8)

  a) Not “vain” repetition (Mt6:7) Jesus-Mk 14:32-36,Mt 26:44 Paul-II Cor 12:8

  b) "shameless persistence” Luke 18:1-6

  c) Spiritual warfare- Daniel 10:12, Ps 103:20, Hebrews 1:14

How long should we keep asking ?

    1) Till it is answered

    2)  Till God assures us it will be answered

    3)  Till God "refines" our request

8.   Ask along with Others        ( Matthew 18:18-20  )

There is added strength and endurance in any type of joint effort.( Genesis 11:1-6, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 ) The same is true concerning prayer. All of the aspects of individual prayer can be multiplied by praying with others.   (i.e. seeking God's will, praying in faith, with persistence, etc.)
